Maths are useless ?!
Hi,
Today, I met (again…) persons who think that maths are useless in life.
That’s absolutely not the first time, and probably won’t be the last.
However, I really do not understand such people. There are persons who pretend Maths are useless, but there are persons who really think so ! That’s quite shocking !
There are so many things in the world that need Maths that hearing or reading such a thing is absolutely shocking ! I know not everybody can love them or learn/use category theory, for example, but there are limits…
More generally, there is a kind of persons that think that when some science is abstract, it’s useless.
I know this post is not quite useful, but I needed to write these few lines… Thanks.
That’s perhaps why the Occidental world is bound to superseded by the Oriental one. Without maths (and science), we will loose the edge. It has already begun with all brains prefering finance/marketing/… than science.

Moreover, many of great researchers in here seems to prefer working in US or Canada rather than in France, for all the reasons we already know… One sure thing is that France is going to have less and less researchers in science (except in Medecine maybe…).
I’m not sure the government still can do something to save this situation…
Maths are everywhere. People simply forgets how useful it is. Worth, there is a growing movement of people rejecting science (creationism?). They do think it’s just a _belief_ like any others. To me it’s worth than just pretending maths are useless. After all, not everyone is supposed to have studied enough maths at school to be able to understand what they imply.
Indeed there are people who simply reject exact sciences, except medecine, probably because medecine _directly_ (that’s the important word) implies saving people, etc. Those people do not care at all at sciences, researches, and don’t trust researchers… Just take a look at LHC in Switzerland… They thought the Earth was gonna implose…
I’m glad too see I’m not mad for having such an opinion about those people.
